Principal York Impressions

Welcome back to York! Around Christmas time last year we visited this stunning hotel.

A blend of late Victorian architecture and modern vibes here at the Principal in York. A hotel that was on my “need-to-visit” list for so long so I was excited to finally see the beautiful hotel for myself and share these impressions with you. The hotel is located in the heart of the city right by the train station so whether you’re traveling for business or leisure it’s the perfect location. Parking is available as well and there is no need to book a spot in advance.

Principal is a collection of city-centre hotels based in landmark buildings in exceptional locations across the UK. The Principal Hotels have joined the InterContinental Hotels Group which means you can earn and redeem rewards at Principal properties across the UK.

The hotel lobby is absolute stunning and the Christmas decorations were beautiful. I think the staircase with the picture frames and mirrors looks so unique. No need to use the elevator when you’ve got such a cool staircase! Seeing this hotels interior on social media is what made me want to stay here in the first place.

I booked a one night stay with a Garden View. Upon arrival at around 2pm our room was already available so we didn’t have to wait. Our Deluxe Double room was on the first floor. Even though we were close to the elevator and our room was overlooking the parking area, it was pretty quiet. If you book a garden view room I recommend to ask for one on a higher floor to get a better view.

Our room was spacious, clean and filled with attention to detail. I love the unique added touches of the red phone and “tuck box“. So before heading out we tucked into the box and had a cuppa and chocolate before exploring York.

“Tuck Box”

Famous red phone.

In the lovely marble bathroom you’ll find luxurious Elemis products and a lovely shower along with enough counter space to spread out and get ready in the morning. Housekeeping paid attention to detail here as well: the towels were folded nicely, robes tied neatly and the amenities logos faced forward.

After a good nights sleep in the big cozy bed we were looking forward to breakfast. We were greeted and seated by the staff right away. Even though there were a lot of hungry guests, the staff did a great job at refilling the buffet, taking guests orders and clearing tables.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Principal York has passed the Hotel Wise test! The hotel staff is very friendly and everyone pays attention to detail, from check in to clean rooms and the beautiful interior across the hotel. The hotel offers a very nice afternoon tea which I look forward to trying the next time I stay here.
